La Vuelta a España 2015 Stages
BMC Racing Team picked up the team time trial win at stage 1 of the Vuelta a España 2015 kicking off the last Grand Tour of the season with Peter Velits in the red overall leader’s jersey.
I am super happy. We did everything perfectly – everything that we spoke about was done to plan. The only thing we did not discuss was who would cross the line first. The last kilometer went so fast, we really did not change position or think about who was going to be first to the line. We just wanted to get to the finish as quickly as possible.”
– Peter Velits, BMC Racing Team
BMC Racing Team crossed the line in 8 minutes 10 seconds, one second faster than second place Tinkoff-Saxo and ORICA-GreenEDGE, who placed third.
The team time trial results times did not count toward the overall race individual standings after concerns were raised about a narrow bridge and dirt and sand on the course led.
Although the time-trial was neutralized and doesn’t count towards the GC, our plan was to give our best and fight for the win. We didn’t want to take any unnecessary risks but at the same time we weren’t there to take an easy ride. Congratulations to the entire squad for the great effort they put today on that tricky and technical course. We missed the first spot for less than a second but that is just the start of a long and tough Vuelta.”
Rafal Majka, Tinkoff-Saxo
